What is Electrolysis?
A safe, permanent method of hair removal, Electrolysis works to destroy the hair follicle itself, which completely separates itself from temporary, and sometimes damaging, methods like laser and waxing. Electrolysis for hair removal has been around since the 1800s…it has stood the test of time.
Electrolysis is a simple procedure performed by inserting a thin filament into the hair follicle. A short burst of heat into the follicle cauterizes the growing part of the hair, known as the hair bulb or papilla (the blood supply). The bulge is also destroyed, killing all present stem cells and preventing new stem cells from stimulating new growth. The destruction of the papilla seals off the follicle and thwarts any new growth of hair. Electrolysis does take time as the hair needs to be present to treat the follicle and since hair grows in cycles, we must wait for the new hairs to present themselves. While we often talk about ‘killing the hair’, we are in fact destroying the follicle itself, achieving permanent hair removal.

What is the process like?
Our hair grows in cycles, and no matter the part of the body, we aim to treat the follicle in the most active growth cycle. In order to achieve this, it is important to follow the clearance schedule your Electrologist recommends. Most of the time, this will be a full clearance every six-weeks for the first 12 months. After that, we typically move to an 8 week clearance schedule. The hair growth cycle depends on factors such as area of the body, hormones, heredity, and your own personal growth cycle. Hairs that show above the skin within 6 weeks of a clearance are NEW HAIRS. If a full clearance is obtained at each growth cycle, total treatment time is on average 18-24 months.
